My new gaming rig has the following stuff:

I have a square box with an on/off button and some fan controls. (I think that's what they are because if I turn them down or up the fan sounds goes with it) It also has some VERY COOL graphics on the side of it.

I also have a monitor, a mouse with no wires and a keyboard.

You'll have to ask Tomb if you need anymore details, but I think that pretty much covers it.

:)

It hasn't changed much except I did successfully flash the video card bios to unlock all 16 pixel pipes. I am going to try and extend it's life a little more before any major changes. I was able to get an AMD FX-55 box retail chip from Newegg for $199, plus a free 250gb hard drive. I still haven't swapped it out yet but hope it will extend the gaming life of this box.

Well I might get my new horse in time for the new year . . . we'll see. Either way, I'm thinking of buying one off the shelf. Any suggestions? I know most of you build, but I've never done anything more than install RAM, or a new graphics card. I know people who have offered to build for me, but I just get the suspicion that I want more than I trust people to put together for me (water cooled and the like). If anyone wants to convince me that building from scratch is the ONLY way to go, then give it a try. Otherwise I'd love to hear what people think about pre-built rigs that are out there. Thanks guys.

I'm like you Shop - I wouldn't know how to build one. That being said, I've been keeping an eye on various gaming rigs and their ratings recently. There's been good talk about this one: Cyberpower Gamer Infinity Ultimate ( www.cyberpowerpc.com ) - a high end for sure, but their "lesser" PCs get really good ratings as well. They just compared the above one to a similarly configured Alienware (that sells for $3k more) and it beat it out in just about every performance test. Every Cyberpower review I've read recently has been very positive.

DannieD

Cyberpower is where Dave and I purchased our rigs from. I don't have any complaints and I don't think Dave would either. We did extensive resaerch on several sites. We could not build one as cheap as we could purchase one from them plus get a two year warranty. Hope this helps.....

P.S. Whatever you do Shop don't let Baldi talk you into a Pentium chip!!!

GO AMD!!!

Theres just something special about home built. Not unlike working on your favorite hot-rod. You admit to installing ram and a graphics card, heck your half way there. For me the most fun is doing the research about what parts I want to use, then shopping around for the best price and then eagerly awaiting the arrival of all the new goodness. Then the big night of putting it all together and firing up your new toy box full of hand picked parts and installing what you want for software, not the garbage load of crap you get in a store bought rig.

Of course the warranty isn't quite the same, but I haven't needed one yet.

And don't let water scare you, it's a lot easier and safer than you think. So many quality tutorials out there to help you through it. Nice all in one kits, or pick your own custom install, heck I even made my own reservoir.

Just my 2 cents because you asked. I would like to hear Tomb weigh in on this subject, the man can build.

some nice systems here i see but i have or had the best of all!!!! Nip knows LOL.

way back in the days playing cod and BF2 with the old farts balti and nip i had a laptop that could barely run pacman :).

system: dell insp 5150
CPU: P4 2.8 non HT
RAM: 2x 2700 256 at 533 - upgraded to 2x 1gig 5300 to play eq2
Video: nvidia geforce fx5200go 32meg

now after 4 years of playing on that shity system i finally broke down and bought me a desktop with some decent power.

system: Acer Aspire M5100
CPU AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4400+ (2 CPUs), ~2.3GHz
RAM: 2x 512 5300 at 677 (stock) + 2x PNY 1gig 5300 at 677 DDR2
Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GS 256meg direct X 9 (for the time being till i get some more cash to run a nice direct X 10 card).
HD: 320gig i believe 7200 speed
DVD: DVDRW
Monitor: 19" half ass lcd that gets the job done :)

i plan on upgrading the video to 8200+ direct X10 depending on what i can afford in the future but the ram and cpu i dont realy plan on doing much else with. all in all i think its a hella upgrade from the laptop i been playing on for years and im loving the new look this thing is putting out!!

All right everyone, I'm getting closer to buying my new computer but I have a couple more questions for everyone before I take the nes-tea plunge.

Should I just go ahead and get Vista now (as it would be cheaper) or should I instal the XP SPII that I have on my old rig and wait until Vista is a reliable product? You can vote that it is a toss up too.

Who thinks that it is a great idea to have two CD/DVD drives? I know it's all of $50 but is this a good way to save the 50 quid, or is it good to split the load of playing games and playing DVD's?

Some of the CyberPower rigs I'm looking at come with 2XNvid. 8500's. Is it better to trade 2 lesser power vid cards for one 8800GTS (or whatever), or am I better off with the dual vid cards?

I know people here are loyal to their own brands, but who thinks it's better to get a Phenom AMD processor, and who thinks it's better to get a pretty good Intel dual, or quad core?

The last two questions are the ones that I'm most interested in. Thanks in advance for everyone who weighs in. Hopefully I'll get all of this done real soon.

Here's a link to one of the rigs I'm leaning toward (before any cusomization). It will give you an idea of the range I'm working in.

Well, to start off...

-I would probably stick with your XP unless you are unhappy with it. From what i heard a long time ago about Vista, the security was the best improvement on it. I personally have not had a problem with XP security (knock on wood). I dont even have a virus scan installed, just my firewall.

- I have a CD/RW and a DVD/CD, separate. I would probably only have my DVD/CD drive but DVDs were new when i bought this computer. :) If you use a lot of CDs and DVD's in your computer, i might go separate but i dont think you would have a major problem with a combo. I will probably buy a external DVD/RW in a few weeks and only use that. It also depends how many spots you have for your drives.

-I am also planning on buying 2 XFX GeForce 8600 GT 256MB or 2 EVGA 512-P2-N757-TR Geforce 8600 GT 512MB. I only have one card in now (which is old as dirt, GeForce FX 5600). 2 cards are probably cheaper (about $100-$125 per card)than one big one with almost the same amount of power.

-As for the AMD or Intel, idk. I have an intel and have had no problems with it (knock on wood again). I have heard that Intel is more capatiable with more stuff and AMD's will fry quicker if not properly installed. I have also heard that AMDs are better than Intel. Im not sure who is correct, if anyone. I dont know on that one. I would probably buy an Intel again since im use to it.

www.zipzoomfly.com is a good and inexpensive website for all your parts.

I hope this helps and makes sense. I also hope alot of other people put their input in so i can see what everyone thinks.

Good luck
Chester

Should I just go ahead and get Vista now (as it would be cheaper) or should I instal the XP SPII that I have on my old rig and wait until Vista is a reliable product? You can vote that it is a toss up too.Right now, I'd stick with XP. Vista is more secure and is actually quite reliable now but you'll get more bang out of your hardware running XP. Vista is a bit more power hungry. Hopefully when SP1 officially comes out it will include some performance tweaks. There is really no reason to move to Vista yet unless security is an issue and you want a shiny new GUI. Don't let DX10 make you think you need Vista because there are very few games that will actually use and they are still DX9 compatible. IMO, I like Vista. I have it on my laptop and it works wonderfully and it's never done anything goofy or crashed. That being said, I wouldn't run it as my gaming OS yet.

Who thinks that it is a great idea to have two CD/DVD drives? I know it's all of $50 but is this a good way to save the 50 quid, or is it good to split the load of playing games and playing DVD's?You will be perfectly fine with one optical drive. Two can be convenient for copying cd's or if you don't feel like switching out game cd's as much but otherwise one is fine. I only run one DVD-R/W in mine. YMMV.

Some of the CyberPower rigs I'm looking at come with 2XNvid. 8500's. Is it better to trade 2 lesser power vid cards for one 8800GTS (or whatever), or am I better off with the dual vid cards? That's hard to answer without seeing benchmark's to compare. The new 8800's are fast GPU's. Are they faster than two 8500's in SLi? I couldn't tell you. I know the single 8800GTX I put in Nip's pc was a beast.

I know people here are loyal to their own brands, but who thinks it's better to get a Phenom AMD processor, and who thinks it's better to get a pretty good Intel dual, or quad core?Intel, Intel, Intel. The Core2 Duo's and Core2Quads are awesome processors and the prices are good too. Just make sure you get one with a good L2 cache. Check out the good benchmarking sites out there and the answer will be very clear.

For your video cards you might be interested in the new nvidia EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT SSC Edition which received a nice review in Maximum PC. It supports PCI-E 2.0 and provides HDCP decryption on both DVI links, which renders the chip capable of displaying Blu-ray or HD DVD movies at the native resolution of a 30-inch LCD. One down side is it won't support DX10.1.

Or if you prefer AMD Radeon then you might check out the Asus EAH3870. It does as much or more than the nvidia offering for new technology support, though it remains to be seen how important these features will be in the near future.

I would stay with XP for now as Ninja pointed out. For gaming its just better for now. I too would go with Intel procs for the same reasons.

Ordered my new rig a few days ago from Velocity Micro. The last one I bought from them is the most stable PC I've ever owned (and I've owned a lot, going back to the days I bought parts separately and built). I was gonna wait for Win 7 but its still looking like early 2010.. Ah well even if it comes out next month I'll upgrade sometime after.

Basic specs:

OS : Vista Ultimate 64 (I wanted the home features and need business shit like IIS for my work)
MOBO : Intel DX58SO
CPU : Core i7-965 Extreme Edition 3.2Ghz with Intel Heatsink
RAM : 6GB DDR3-1333 triple chanel w/heat spreader
VID : 1792MB Geforce GTX 295 (only 1 for now, its a two-GPU card)
PS : 850w
SND : X-Fi XTreme Gamer
HD : 2 Hitachi 7200rpm 1 TB drives (didn't go RAID this time, would have liked to fill it up with velociraptors but I put more money into the CPU instead, gotta cut back somewhere)
DVD1 : 20x LiteOn DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Burner w/Lightscribe
DVD2 : 16x LiteOn DVD/48x CD-RW

Keeping same monitor / mouse / keyboard setup for the time being. I didn't really want to pay the premium for the CPU but since CPU is important both for work and other hobby (music production) it is worth it to me.

I made it about 2.5 years without upgrading my last rig which was a first. This one might last 3.5 years without upgrade.
Previous machine will become a development box running server OS (my previous machine always gets recommissioned in this way).

It won't ship until next week so it will probably be 2 weeks before I'm actually gaming on it.

Can it run Crysis? :D Nice specs overall either way the i7 are a beast. I love my setup considering I waited 6 years to finally upgrade my P4 3.0 which now serves as my sandbox/downloader. You could always do what I did and play around with a dual boot. I will actually probably load up Crysis and Crysis Warfare again to see how I like them as they were meant to be played.. I had to turn the graphics down quite a bit on my current one and never was satisfied with the framerate (although Crysis Warfare was a big improvement). I think Far Cry 2 looks better and plays better overall than Crysis, and my current rig plays it well enough until I start playing some of the really large custom multiplayer maps which have lots of trees and moving foilage, then I sometimes drop down to around 30-35 FPS and I can really notice the framerate stutter and mouse lag, so I'm looking forward to smoothing that out.

I can't say I blame EvenBalance for not supporting Win7 beta yet, it would just cost them money to release updates for the different beta builds with no gain for doing it. I'll probably just run Vista 64 until Win 7 comes out.. there were rumors that it might come out in June but everything I've read from MS still says early 2010.

The i7 chips indeed kick ass, I'm sure you've probably read about Turbo mode? I believe all the i7 series supports it. Basically an easier and safer way to overclock.. You can tell it to overclock any of the 4 cores (or all of them) whenever CPU demand is high and temperatures allow. Pretty slick (and from the benchmarks I've seen it does make a difference). I'm now wondering if I should have opted for a better CPU cooler, but again I don't usually push the CPU out of spec. I did realize after the fact that the GTX 295 it comes with is actually an EVGA 295+, which is factory overclocked.. Only about a 5% difference from what I'm reading but a few extra frames never hurts :)

I still need to get that since I've been out of PC gaming for about 2 years since I switched to console gaming. I made the jump to buy this PC because I wanted some more power and to do some PC gaming again.

The turbo feature is a nice auto-overclock feature especially for older single threaded games. Your chip has that nice ability to adjust each core which will come in handy anything you want to throw at it. Overclocking has become the new standard and companies are embracing it.

The new rig came yesterday and I have it about 80% set up the way I need it, and of course the final 20% with probably take two weeks. It's actually faster than I had hoped, I was estimating from published benchmarks I had seen that I would get about a 2x framerate increase over my old system. It's actually quite a bit more.. with the settings I was running before (a few items bumped down from max eyecandy) , I was getting an average of about 41FPS in the Ranch Small demo running the FC2 benchmark tool (which you can find in the game directory) under XP. With the new one under Vista 64 with same settings I get 110fps for more than a 2.5x increase. If I turn up all the eye candy to max, even with 8x AA and DX10 I get an average of about 81fps. And the benchmarks stress the GPU way more than a typical multiplayer map does (even the complex custom ones), so that means on the stock multiplayer maps I'm typically running somewhere between 100-200fps with everything maxed. Not bad, it will be interesting to see my next power bill. So far I haven't run into any real hurdles, but then the only games I've loaded up so far are FC2 and GRAW2. Getting the mic volume right in teamspeak was a chore but it usually is and its not something that needs to be done every day. I might pick some of you guys' brains on Vista 64 tips with games since I'm so used to XP, but since this is a hardware thread I thought I'd post the benchmarks and save the rest for appropriate threads.

As far as Vista 64bit tips? Create a Games directory e.g C:\Games\ and install all of your games there. Not that it's ever given me trouble with games but the 64bit version of Vista protects it's Program Files directories. You have two, "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)". Otherwise not many tips to offer. I just run Vista 64 fully featured and it's been sound since day one. The only thing I do and really only applies when I play Fallout 3 is to turn off my AV temporarily.

I do the same thing with the Games directory, except I put it on the D drive. I noticed that with the two versions of Program Files, and naturally most ends up going into x86, which is okay by me. Interesting about Fallout 3, I have that one although I need to do the Steam backup/restore thing with it or else download it again. Which AV if I may ask, and what happens if it is running during FO3? Does it just run slower or not at all?

Vista does a good job of emulating a 32 bit environment on the fly.

As for FO3, I turn my AV off because I tend to not get as much jitter in my motion. I think it's because the AV is monitoring everything that's going on including loading the textures of the game and what not. I use Eset's NOD32. I have noticed though that with the latest patches it hasn't been so much an issue.

Agreed.. most users will probably do well to accept all defaults as it can make life easier. The main reason I create D:\Games is because (in theory at last) putting apps on a different drive than the OS makes loading a little quicker. The other reason is that by splitting things across drives I can distribute space better (drive performance slows as they fill up). But the reality of it is that I'm not very good about cleaning shit up that I'm not using, so over time I end up needing to distribute games or other apps by installing them wherever I have room, which means in the long run some of my games will be under D:\Games and some under C:\Program Files (x86). But yes, for most users that's not worth the hassle of not being sure things are. I do still keep my data under a Data folder that's completely independent of what Windows wants to do (like the documents and settings folder). This is just a habit that harkens back to the days before there were default Windows locations like My Documents My Pictures, My Music, etc.. My data folder has had roughly the same structure for the basic things like documents, images, music etc for probably 20 years... I guess old habits die hard. I use the new way of doing things as mostly temporary storage or as a convenience because certain software or hardware like digital cams like to put things there by default.. But, nobody uses my primary PC but me... if I needed to share it with multiple users it's easier to do it the MS way.

Like Ninja said I would leave things the way you've got em Ice.

Hey Guys I have been meaning to ask. I have Win XP and I know I am going to have to switch to Vista eventually so I just purchased another copy of Vista Ultimate for my gaming machine. Has anyone had any problems with compatibility between the games we play and windows Vista? I presently have Win Vista Ultimate on my Business machine and it works pretty well. It has some bugs and I don't like the way I have to update it every day with about 14 or 15 updates each time. I still have a few things to figure out on it but I will get it eventually I guess. I also have it on my Lap top so I guess I'm sort of resigned to the fact that I will be using it? Let me know what you think. Yes you to ROO!

I got a copy of Vista (32-bit Business) with my last PC, but I bought the PC before Vista was officially released, so it came with XP installed and they shipped me Vista a few months later.. I never installed it because by that time I had so much set up on XP... with not only my games, but my development and music production setups it takes literally weeks to get everything perfectly configured (unless I just took 2-3 solid days off work to deal with it). I was never motivated to install Vista because in general I would have taken a performance hit over XP if using 32-bit, and because of the initial lack of vendor driver support (believe it or not, most of the complaints of bugs were because companies like nVidia and ATI did not invest enough development time in Vista driver versions and were not the fault of the OS itself).

So, two and a half years later itwas time for a new PC, so I am running Vista (64 bit) for the first time since loading a beta in a virtual many years back. Because of that, I am only in the initial stages of getting my games re-installed. So far (3 games total) I haven't run into any game specific issues... I just let the games through the Windows firewall when prompted and my router settings (which is the key to multiplayer working in many games) has not changed, so I have not specifically had any problems yet with Vista and games or anything else really.

One thing I noticed is Velocity Micro was shipping Vista 64-bit by default on all their high-end gaming systems, and they are extremely rigorous on their testing processes. I think they even charged an extra fee if you wanted to downgrade to XP or Vista 32. It looked like most other vendors were doing the same, so I figured if there were major support nightmares they would not have been shipping Vista 64.

So, my recommendation so far is to just go Vista 64. Most gamers will only need Home Premium, I needed Ultimate.

I only needed Ultimate because I need IIS and some of the development stuff in the business edition, and I wanted the media stuff of the home edition, and ultimate is the only way to get both. I have a friend who is also a developer and he decided to go cheap on the initial purchase and get Home Edition, and one day when he tried to do some work from home and realized there was no way to download and install all the stuff he needed on home edition, so he ended up having to order the upgrade to Ultimate, waiting a week for it to arrive, and paying more than if he had just gotten the license from the vendor. I haven't paid much attention to the differences that are going to be in Windows 7, but if they are similar, having Vista Ultimate will likely make my upgrade to Win 7 Ultimate cheaper.

But I should say it again, probably everyone reading this only needs Home Premium.

Right after I wrote that I looked up the edition comparisons and realized that Home Premium does not come with Remote Desktop. Unless there is a workaround for that, it means anyone that VPN's into their work and remotes into a machine, or needs to remote into a server to admin it from afar (not necessarily game servers though) would need at least the business edition.

Yeah IIS is one of those special needs cases. I'm also seriously thinking of jumping to Windows 7 64-bit. I've been running the beta on my laptop since it was first available and it's been running great and fast! Much less system requirements than it's older brother. It is after all Vista's core, just optimized.

As far as I know the client is available on the home version but the server portion is missing. Also I've connected to a VPN and used remote desktop from XP home before so I don't see why Microsoft would exclude it from Vista Home Premium. It wouldn't hurt to double check before you come to that conclusion. You should still be able to work from home if needed.

If you are looking to run terminal server on your PC I found this on google - http://portal.tonychan.org/Default.aspx?tabid=58&EntryID=123

I remember reading some forums about getting the server side working but people were running into trouble.

Hmm.. I only glanced at the comparison table briefly, I took away that the client remote desktop connect wasn't in Home (I thought that was one of the issues the friend I mentioned earlier ran into with Home), but as long as Home has the client (which makes more sense to me) I would be back to recommending Home for folks not specifically needing development items like IIS.

I actually think this is where artistry and techology meet. Not to take the easy way out, but Soja just built a badass fucking machine there. Oh and the obligatory "great cable management" comment. Werd

Nice rig SOJA! One question though, why big slow hard drives and no SSD?

Nice rig SOJA! One question though, why big slow hard drives and no SSD?

Simple, I need lots of space. I have 122 games on Steam, and maybe 20-30 more store bought games. I also have 1TB+ in movies, music, and pictures. It would just be way too expensive to try to store that on SSD's.
