Did you try a full reset? Plug the unit back in, wait until it's fully booted, then hold the reset button in until the lights flash and it restart process starts again. If you can still access the the config screen somehow try and get a firmware update as well. That is if you can get it running.

it's a cheap-ass router. sometimes they break. id try some of the suggestions already thrown out there before i got a new one, some setting may have gone screwy....

I've had a Linksys WRT54G wireless for a few years without a single issue. I recently switched to a D-Link DFL-200 for the separate LAN and DMZ networks and VPN capability.

Heen,

Ninja is right. You may have corrupt firmware. I bought a Linksys WRT54G Version 5 router at a garage sale for 5 bucks. The guy said it just stopped working and he just bought a new one. I searched the Linksys database and came up with this fix, which did the job. I don't know what model or version you have, but that is that most common one that I have found. I saved this link so this could be a starting point for you. Check their forums too.

Here is a link to a non-company site that I have found tremendous info on wireless networks. It can get a little too technical but maybe it will help. There are some nice hacks on different routers too. I linked you to the WRT54G info page. You can work your back from there if that is not your model number.

I really haven't said much in here about it, but to a few. I started a repair shop 2 months ago and have been getting busier and busier every week. I see alot of desktops and laptops with malware, viruses, registry issues, power supplies etc. I get alot calls on dead routers. Most people don't change the default password that comes with their router out of the box or correctly setup the encryption on their WEP. I tell people to bring it in and I charge $25 to reset the router and firmware. I have done about 6 of these so far. Wireless routers are so easy to get into and most of the time that is what has happened. I could start a whole new thread on how to do that, but that would be illegal. BTW, I sold that garage sale router for 50 bucks.

I too agree. All wireless routers have the same default settings to get into them. Changing the default password and setting their WEP encryption should be the first thing you do when you get it out of the box and hook it up. Heenalu, if the full reset works and it should, I would consider changing your password and setting your WEP up. If you do not use a wireless connection at all on your router, I would also consider shutting the wireless system off. You can do this without interfering with any of the hardwire connections you have on this router. Your wireless connection is another way people can get in to hack into your router. If the full reset does not work, redownloading the firmware can help. If you are still considering getting a new router, I would also look into one that has MAC Address Filtering capability. This is another great security feature. This only allows equipment to access your system that is only on your MAC address filering table on your router. For those who do not know, your MAC Address is a unique code your NIC card has that distingushes your equipment to everyone else that is out there. It acts almost a serial number. You put this MAC address in the MAC filtering table of your router and it only allows the ones you have on this table access in and out of your network. If you get a router with this capability and do not know how to find your MAC address, let me know and I will help you find it.

Excellent...I have a LinkSys BEFSR41 router. I have no idea how to use it...how to modify anything....it might as well be a cup holder.

I know that it is the problem I am having trying to connect to multiplayer games in Company of Heroes. There is no other game with multiplayer capabilities that I have had problems connecting but this one. Reading tech forums makes my head hurt as it all looks like Chinese writing to me...but I am certain it is a router issue (opening ports-that I don't have a clue how to do). If any of you knowledgable people could help me, it would be much appreciated!!! Maybe hook up on TeamSpeak sometime?

Heen, you downloaded the firmware upgrade file first correct? Keep posting up if you're having problems, we'll try and get you going! :)

On a side note, don't use WEP for your encryption. Use at least WPA or WPA2. WEP can be cracked in minutes and isn't a very good encryption method anymore.

I can help you with this, I will have to look over the online manual of your router to see how to open ports. I know on mine you can select what games and programs you want to have access with and select them or you can open certain ports needed to play. I will also need to know what ports your game needs to have open. It is located in the manual of your game somewhere. Usually it is in the technical spec in your manual.

I've had a BEFSR41. I had it before my Linksys wireless router. Opening ports is super simple and is setup just like any other Linksys router.

Here's an example. You're screen may differ slightly but like I said, Linksys pretty much stays consistent with their setup screens. Below is a screen shot of a WRT54G wireless router. The first thing you're going to want to do is setup up a static IP on your computer and then the relevant info like your subnet (usually 255.255.255.0), your gateway (router's IP address), then your DNS servers. Once that is taken care of like Doug said, find out what ports and further what connection type (TCP/UPD or both) needs to be opened. Once you know that, fill out that information similar to what you seen below. Just catch me on x-fire or Teamspeak and I can walk you through it if nobody else does first.

I downloaded the firmware while i was connected directly to my cable modem and saved it to my computer. I then hooked up to the router and performed the reset function and the router went into firmware mode (power light flashing) when I type in the ip (192.168.1.1) it says internet explorer cannot open the page.

Firmware mode? The reset button only functions as a reset. To my knowledge it doesn't put the unit into a firmware mode, at least not in any Linksys routers that I've used. In order to upgrade the firmware, you must have the latest firmware file, which you have, then, go into the router's "Administration" tab, then choose "Firmware Upgrade" from the choices below. From there you have a dialog box where you can browse for your firmware upgrade file. Once you find the file you need, click the "Upgrade" button and let the router do it's work. Hopefully this helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Heen, What is the exact model number and version. The link I posted was for the WRT54G Version 5. The Management Console fix is for that version and model only. I gave you that so you could have a starting point in the Linksys knowledgable database. If that is your version it should have worked. It did for me. To find your version number, flipped the unit over and it is on the sticker in the top left hand corner. You will also see the serial number and MAC address. If you reset the router 192.168.1.1 should be the factory setting along with "admin " as the password. There is no user name.

As far as IE not finding it, you might clear your temp files, cache and other stuff using a cleaner like CCleaner or Cleaner they are freeware. Google them and you will find them. There is a program called WinSock XP Fix. You can download it. Basically it cleans out your TCP/IP stack and rewrites 32 dll files to the registry that may be corrupted. It might be a reach but try it. It won't hurt I use it after I do virus and malware removal. There has to be a reason your router quit. Download it here http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html

You know if I could upload to the FTP I would pass alot of the tools along I have. I am sure the rest of the tech heads have their favorites they could pass on. I am always testing or looking at something new.

thanx for all the input guys...keep it comingYou don't need those cleaner programs Heen. You can do all that stuff in Windows. No offense McFeely but I steer clear away from alot of the "cleaner" type programs, especially the registry type as I've seen more harm than good come from them. I don't think that is the root of the problem anyway. Give the unit a few moments to start up and then sit connected to your computer for a bit. It takes a moment or two for Windows to "find" it's new connection. However, I'm thinking you just have a bum unit at this point. If the Linksys fixes aren't working then it's probably hosed. You are holding the reset button in for about 5-10 seconds then releasing right? That does a master reset on the unit.

EDIT: When you try to access the router are you trying to do it via wireless or are you plugging into the unit?
