This week I have "repaired" 6 computers that were brought in for the same problem. The problem: previous beta version of Windows Defender installed on customer's computers was causing a memory error. The cause: the January Windows Update released this week caused the error due to the beta version support ended on 12-31-06 and beta 2 came out 1-1-07. The solution: uninstall and re-install the new version of Windows Defender. The charge: $65 a pop, thats my charge for carry in diagnostics. I got one in on Monday and 2 on Wednesday. Today my first 3 customers were the same thing. I told them when they dropped it off to let me dump it and put AVG on they said no they like the automation. I hate to charge people but they are dedicated Microsoft customers and I can only thank Bill for that. I wish all repairs were this easy, there are some that I spend too much time on.

McFeely, I feel your pain. It seems like Bill Gates has put blinders on everyone keeping them from experiencing some great Operating Systems and other programs. I have dragged several departments heads and managers in meetings explaining some great programs and operating systems. Some of which work simularly as anything Microsnot has put out but work better and before I sow them anything they want to walk out. Why, because it is not a Microsnot product. They feel that if it is not "Microsnot", it is inferior. Well, I have won some battles, I have my company I work for to finally try Linux, Lotus, and Novell software. People need to start sending a message to Bill Gates and his Microsnot dictatorship by buying and using these other more stable platforms. Then while these other software companies quietly take bigger and bigger shares of the software market, Microsnot fades into oblivion loosing money in the process. Then they will realize that the need to create a more stable and quality product.

Not to worry Bill is on his way out. I think this is his last year. I've also heard he doesn't have much to do with day to day operations anymore. Then again in the same conversation I heard he is a huge micro manager.
On topic though, I have an aunt that I'm "trying" to get her to switch to Linux but it's an uphill battle. I gave her the Ubuntu live CD so she can try it. I haven't heard back yet. I think it's because she's afraid to admit to me she was wrong. :D
