Has anyone used The Shield or BitDefender anti virus? This is the first year I have had to buy an anti virus. I usually got a "copy" from the company that I worked for for free. Now I have to buy something. Since I have to buy one, I want to get my money's worth. I have read the reviews and done my own research into these 2 anti virus products and want to go with one of them. I was wondering if anyone was using one of these and what they thought of them to help me make up my mind.

Neither. Get NOD32 from Eset Software. http://www.eset.com That's what I run now on all my PC's. Try the 30 day trial, it's worth it.

I use Nod32 as well. I've used Bit Defender before and have had things fall through the cracks...

I've been using Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic for over a year now and it works better than anything I've ever bought. Did I mention its FREE. It updates free also.

It's caught and cleaned things others couldn't. I tried AVG and it found a trojan, but could not kill or fix it! Antivir always has so far.

I can say that all the suggested ones are good. I use AVG primarily as my active and Avira configured to run a secondary daily scan. When I am scanning a customer's drive for viruses they are configured to run together. Avira does seem to catch more than AVG, but hat is only because AVG is in the primary position. I guess I should change it to test it. I have been running Nod on another machine because I had heard good things about it. No problems yet. Just testing it out. I tried out Kapersky, but it is a whore like Norton on services.
Does anyone run an active anti-spyware program? I have been using Ad-Watch, but I am not thrilled with it. AVG now bundles the old Ewido program but I have not tried it yet. I liked Ewido last year, but I cannot settle on one right now. I have the usual scanners S&D and Ad-Aware which I am happy with.

I run Microsoft Anti-spyware as my active spyware scanner, then the usual Spybot S&D, and Ad-aware for the weekly scans. Results are usually pretty boring but then again I don't do behavior that results in getting spyware in the first place. What's the reasoning behind running two virus scanners? I'm actually considering not running an active virus scanner at all. Just do weekly scans.

When I replace or upgrade a customer hard drive before I ghost it I run both at the same time plus the usual spware scans. It is alot easier than re-installing XP. I have a work desktop that I will download drivers, workarounds and other programs. I do a incremental back up of that every other day and a full twice weekly. It is probably overkill but then I have OCD.
It may go back to when HIV was just starting in the early 80's. I used to wear 2 rubbers back then.

Then when you don't wear one it's awesome...kind of like swinging two bats in the on deck circle!

Is that so you could be 'one jump ahead?'

Thanks, I knew there was another good one out there but could not for the life of me think of what it was called. This was the one I was originally trying to get. It is one that does not use a lot of system resources either. This is a big thing for me. I run Zone Alarm firewall and Spy Bot. I was looking for a real good anti virus to complete my inpenetrable wall. (So I can surf more porn sites.......lol)

I for one do not run an active anti spyware program. I do run Spy Bot once a week. I am not that concerned with spyware for a few reasons;
I know what sites I go to,
I load all the software on my PC and delete cookies everyday.
My wife does not surf the Internet at all, if she goes to sites, it is ones I go to such as our bank. (She is a good girl and does what I say and does not do things i tell her not to do..)
I have educated her about Pop Ups and what to do to close them if they ever do pop up which is one in about 8 trillion..
I know all of this sometimes does not help, but I have not really had a problem with spyware, adware and such yet.

I know most "experts" advise against running two on one machine. Obviously yours isn't having such problems though. :)

I used to run AVG free (which I still like, for a free AV) but I heard really good things about NOD32 and thought I'd give it a try. I've been pretty happy with it so far and it doesn't use as much resources as AVG either. If you want to free up some more resources you could dump Zone Alarm as well. It used to be a good program but has also gotten hoggy. Also, I don't need to be told every time something tries to talk out from my system. IMO it's just the program trying to justify it's usefulness. I think Windows Firewall does just as good a job as any other software firewall. Besides, if you're behind a router you don't really need a software firewall anyway. Sort of boot and suspenders.
