I have been running the rFactor game getting some seat time in single player and every now and then the sound just goes away and is replaced with a high pitched sort of screeching sound that kills my ears and scares my cats. I have been reluctant to join you guys in TS because of this.

I have a Sound Blaster Fatal1ty Pro Series X-fi xtreme gamer. I looked for updated drivers and there aren't any. Everything works fine in other applications.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tort

You are not alone. This post is from March 2006.

Maybe a solution has been found since.

Thanks for the link to that thread Tomb. I read it and then PM'ed the author to see if he ever fixed it and how. Hopefully he will write back. It is very frustrating to be totally into the game and the volume cranked up and sounding tight and BAM the squeal takes over. I can still play but w/o sound its really hard for me. I rely heavily on sound to know whats going on with the motor and tires.

Its never easy for me, but if I resolve this issue I will join up with you guys and turn some laps. So far I am impressed with the game and a couple of the mods.

Oh by the way, I borrowed one of your avatars, is that okay?

Hehehe...yes! They are actually some test designs PiLL asked me to create for possible use on T-Shirts, Caps, Mugs, etc. He is still working on getting a store setup at CafePress.Com. Help yourself to any of them.

Tort, have you tried new drivers? Have you tested any other speakers through that sound card?

I can't find any new drivers at creative, they say there aren't any available. And I normally use my headphones and thats where I first heard the ear splitting squeal. I have had this particular set-up off and on for the last couple of months.

Running XP w/SP2, wonder if Windows has anything new driver wise.

Is that headset USB or mini phono plug? Does your motherboard have on board sound? If so try it and see if the sound is produced there too.

My headphones are USB, and I have not tied to go back to the O/B sound yet. I am in the middle of a really long thread at Creative forums and the contributers are thinking its related to some sort of conflict between usb devices and the sound card on Asus boards only so far. Some guys are unplugging all devices and it goes away, some guys that doesn't work at all. They fondly refer to the condition as the Screech of death, or sod. If I learn more I will let you know. SO far it appears Creative doesn't really care and most of the guys are selling their cards off.

Thanks for buying my gear, ma-ma-maannnnnn! Check my other products here http://www.fatal1ty.com/products/hardware/ .

As I always say "Buy me so I can pwn you!".

But seriously Tort, it sounds like a software conflict. Maybe un-install and reload the game. I had a problem with the 1st Call of Duty 3 years ago. I did that and it cleared up.

Thanks Mac, I'll give that a try. The thread at Creative was like 20 pages long, full of guys trying almost anything. I was exhausted by the end of it and walked away without a fix.

Tort, have you checked what IRQ resources are assigned and disabled any non necessary peripherals in the mobo bios (serial ports, parallel ports, etc.) or try the X-Fi card in another slot? Have you used End-it-All to close all other background processess, especially any Creative processess that may be causing a conflict. I'm sure you have tried it all by now but trying to see if we can help you get past this.

I am using an Audigy 2 card in my Racing PC and luckily have not had the problem. I have an X-Fi gamer in my Gaming PC but have tested rFactor with it. I will keep my eyes open when looking in the rFactor forums.

Hope to get you on the track with us in both the NASCAR and F1 divisions.

I am using the M/B usb connectors. It was doing it with the usb headphones and the speakers. It is not happening in anything but rFactor. BF2 runs fine, and all other apps as well.

I just did a re-install like Mac suggested and it didn't help. Then I remembered to patch it and it worked during my last test run. I will try again later to see if it still works.

Tomb, I can't move to another slot, there isn't any room to go anywhere. I disabled serial ports.

Will update you later after supper and a shower....it's back!!!

Anyone want to buy a slightly used x-Fi gamer???
