View Full Version : Liquid Cooling...My First Attempt
Tombstone

Been busy re-working one of my PCs and went further with it than I have with others. I know I have heard other OSS mention a liquid cooled rig so some of you may appreciate the fear I had watching the liquid flow thru the innards of my case the first time. So far it is running smooth and fast...plays BF2 better than my main PC. I may save this one for gaming and testing only.
Here are some pics and specs for anyone interested.

Daaaam... You make my case look like chicken crap
I have a similar case (aspire x-navigator)
Very nice job on the wire coverings... i need to do that to mine.
very nice memory ....is there an advantage to having 4 512mbs over the 2 one gigers?
if you have more $$$ to waste i would suggest SLI some 6800 gts(or better) and a dual core then it would be reaaaly sweet... not that it already is!

Whoa...too much credit. The sleeves on the power cables came as is with the power supply. I only used some 1/4" black plastic tubing to cover up any other power cables, like to the vid card a splitter to the hard drive. Sure helps air flow.
I would think you would have less problems with 2 sticks of 1gb rather than finding the perfect match of 4x 512mbs. I was lucky, had 2 sticks for more than 2 years now and found the other pair still for sale on Newegg. I have seen the 1gb sticks running slightly slower timings...CAS3 instead of CAS2, unless you really spend some money.
BTW...I am working on a PC for Roo and made the decision to go the SLI route for him. I am hoping that it will give him any easy and inexpensive upgrade path since we are only starting out with one...but that may be a mid range 7800 series so one might be enuf for now.

OK Tomb that is a fantastic pooter and I want one like it so I guess I have to start buildin it now. Darn, got me started on a new project. I hate to see what it's going to cost me this time, lol! That is a sweet looking machine. The one I built for my wife had the lights but they burned out real quick and I told her forget it she never looked at them anyway. They are still out, lol! She never uses it on line anyway! Take care man and keep building those "COOL" computers. Mine runs about 132 degrees Faren. when we are playing BF2. I think that's a little high but they tell me it's not. So what do I know?

OK. There seems to be some kind of misunderstanding here. These photos are not of Tomb's computer they are of TOMB HIMSELF. Did he not tell you all that he is, in fact, a cyborg from the planet MXPLYTKMFLTBJROOZ in the Antares system and that his mission here on Earth is to provide us humans with something to shoot at while they train us for interplanetary war? It isn't hard to tell really, as you all know he can't drive ANY vehicle without crashing it, his use of the english language is somewhat bizarre.....eg 'me want go big whirly thingy go bang bang in front' (I'd like to fly the Apache) or F*&%$$$#@& bunny hoppers (I can't hit a damn thing with this gun) and he lives in Florida (what real human would chose to do THAT????) Now, the challenge is, which thing in those photos is his reproductive organ??????? My guess would be the weird orange fluted bit..........looks kinda tombstone ish to me..................

OH NO...........Odrater is one too................and I was right about the fluted orange thingy, you can see Odrater has one also, it's a different shape but that probably means he's actually a female...........or maybe on MXPLYTKMFLTBJROOZ they have more than two sexes.........and another thing.....Odrater............odd kinda name?????........wonder what it means in MXPLYTKMFLTBJROOZese???? 'Flaunter of the weird orange fluted thingy' maybe????
Ummm....not sure what the Iowa Peasant was just saying.....but whatever it is, DO NOT ask him to explain it on Vent.
Tomb, that computer looks sweet.....I can't wait to get it. Make sure you take the liquid out so it doesn't freeze while en route to MN. I had no idea you were going to that extent for me.....thanks in advance!!!!!!!!

Been gone so gonna get caught up all in one post:
Hey TJ...post some pics of that Skull you rigged with the LEDs for Power and HDD Activity. You mentioned it on Vent one night.
'Drater...nice freakin huge Heatsink! I bet that keeps your CPU cool. BTW...I think you and Punisher have cases made by the same company. http://www.team-oss.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=5&pos=30
Roo...don't worry, yours will be "mostly" stock cuz I do not think I could afford the support calls. Those flights to MN could get expensive.
Punisher, just wait till I finish with Roos rig I am hoping the case will be truly unique. BTW...I had the water cooling kit for more than 12 months before I was brave enough to go ahead and install it so I was not going to EXPERIMENT on a friends PC. Besides who else has a Punisher logo fan grill, let alone 2! ;)
And lastly...Brit, you are CRAZY and funny!

TJ, looking at your case pics...is that a big duct over the CPU? I see you had it removed in one pic. Very interesting case design. Looks like cooling was a major consideration with the hard drive placement too.
We should probably create a gallery for all these great pics. That way I can check back on them when getting ideas for future projects.

Yes tombstone it is a huge heatsync but its not as big or heavy as the predecessor model.
Punisher's case is the x-cruiser if im not mistaken, I was going to buy that one but i wanted to have something different than punisher's so i went with the navigator, plus i needed the extra 5 to 10 mm for the heatsync to fit.
I would recommend any heatsync with heatpipe technology, its the next best thing to water cooling. Actually i've read a couple reviews saying my heatsync can actually outperform some watercooled systems. It keeps my system under control, except for the fact when my room temperatures rises due to the heat my comp throws off. In that case the whole thing heats up but i don't think its ever gone higher that 55ish degrees celsius.

Damn Brit...now you ruined Roo's surprise. Guess that one of a kind PC i was gonna build isn't one of a kind after all. ;)
