View Full Version : Anticipation/thoughts on OSG in AoC

Gonna copy/paste some emails between Rage and I in reference to an OSG guild within Age of Conan. If you make it all the way to the end of this, I'm going to ask for everyone's input for this.
Rage:
"One think i would like to mention as food for thought.... In these MMO's some game content will require a good number of members... This could include, building a city, protecting it, dungeon content/raids.
What this means is, it may be necessary to recruit in game, if OSG cannot come up with a good group. An alternative is to simply join the ranks of an all ready established guild.
I do feel this may be the most difficult part of entering this type of game for OSG. The clan may want to keep OSG as we know it ... Separate from the Conan OSG guild.
I can set up an OSG-Conan site and TS server. That way, we can keep the two seperate. I say this becuase, AOC will require OSG to multiply big time in order to be a successful MMO guild. This may be an issue when you have a ton of AOC OSG members coming in the same TS server as the OSG COD4 guys.
So, separate TS and separate website/forums. Another thing to keep in mind is Women. A ton of women play these types of games and it will be nearly impossible to be just a male only group. With my past guilds.. the cool thing about it was that all the guys who played.. had their wives play. So, it was pretty darn cool.
Any how.. i just wanted to bring up a few points that are important to think about when starting a MMO guild.
Just to clarify my sentence below..
"it may be necessary to recruit in game, if OSG cannot come up with a good group".
When i say "Good Group" i mean.. as in a large number of people. We already know we have the best group. "
Me:
"My ideal is to keep us on our TS. Hopefully, this will not only show the other (non-mmorpg) members how many of us are playing it, but also allow us to bring new members here to OSG to see what we have to offer. This will finally bring us full circle and have us involved in every style of game out there.
If you think we need a web page, I'm sure that if you made one up for us, I can get Parasite or Pill-Doc to link it to our home page and vice versa (similar to our racing guys who have an OSG Racing site linked here to the home base). This keeps us involved in everything and another way to draw people here to OSG.
We can handle up to 1,000 people in our TS server - so that is definitely not an issue for us. I have no problem with women coming in...nor would anyone else...it would definitely change the membership a little. Our objective in this, and I'll copy/paste a lot of your info into our forums, is to increase our membership and have fun doing so within AoC (or any other MMORPG). It has been disheartening to see various members go off and disappear for awhile to play one of these style of games and not be on our TS. If we can get a good core of us involved with this, it should take off quite nicely!
I would still like to keep OSG membership limited to those 18 and older, as per our rules. If we get younger ones, which I would imagine we probably will, I have no problem having them as members of our guild, but they would have to wait to become full OSG members. I'd like to make that a priority while we are in game ... trying to bring new people here. Imagine this...we have a solid FPS contingent, a solid racing contingent, a solid flight sim contingent, and then we build the solid MMORPG contingent. THAT would be awesome!"
__________________________________________________ ________
All of this I copied/pasted for the rest of you to use as food for thought in these style of games. Please post in this thread any ideas you have to create this OSG guild in Age of Conan. Anyone wishing to volunteer to be the guild leaders, please do so in your responses as well. Since I've never played any of these, I'd rather help out getting things organized on this end and letting one or more of you run the whole OSG guild. Also, if you plan on buying the game, but have nothing to post about in reference yet, please just post here saying you will be getting it so we have a good idea of how many OSG members will be there from the start. Thanks-

heheheh ive been in osg for a long time but my true passion for games r these mmo's id rather play these then anyother due to the skill involved and the grouping of good people to get the job done. for those of u who have never played an mmo it takes time and vigor and help to train your guy get new gear new skills a guild city or player house and hone your skills to defeat the enemy you all like fps ladders well for the most part mmos are a constant ladder either against the ai or pve (player vs computer enemy) which for the most part will always be harder wherever you go due to skill lever and against other guilds called pvp (player vs player) You can due anything you want sell items craft items like armor weapons potions to just things like fishing being a tanner hunter things like that guilds need everything most will learn crafts in more then one thing to benefit the guild.
Rage is also right in the fact that alot of diff people play this we may have better results for 18 yrs or older because of the mature content of this game. Women do play this but if we recruit it is true alot of it will come from within the game and ts you will see fill up almost everynight and shitloads of forum activities from write up on how to's to raid information or skill building info. I for one will probably spend almost most of my time devoted to aoc because i love them and it takes time time time to gain skills . not just gun and gun but it will bring a diverse gorup of people that r diff then those who r like alot of us who multigame thier r people who devote shit loads of time to mmo's and mmo's alone. I for one will have this game asap and im getting the upgraded version due to you getting a mount which is usally a pain in the ass to get since most times u have to be a high level to get a mount (hoarse or riding animal)
On a side note think im goin assasin so i can sneak up on balti and poke him in the ass with my long knife lol ( sexul intent hahaha)
CrazyC Out and if u need a guild leader i would be one
past mmos' played
ultima online
everquest
everquest 2
lineage
anarchy online
lord of the rings online
wold of warcraft
dark ages of camalot <--- awesome game
and a few others
Im with Crazy on this, it takes a ton of time to develop your actual character (no more time than we play COD4 every night). Guild members are needed to be able to accomplish things in game. So a large group will be needed. A lot of the recruiting will come from in game contacts. You will be exposed to a lot of people and will interact with strangers on a daily basis.
One thing that i would like to make clear is that, everyone needs to be on the same page when entering this game. It needs to be clear on what type of server we will enter into, PVP (player vs player), PVE (player vs Environment), or RP (Role Playing).
Once that is determined we all have to make sure that we go into the same server. MMOs are not like COD4. You cannot just jump from server to server. You pick one and that one becomes your home, where you establish yourself as a citizen, with your town, with your guild.
So a post will be necessary to make sure those who buy the game can play the game together. I do believe Age of Conan will require each person to go through a single player mode up until lvl 5, at which point they will be put into the Age of Conan world.
I have not yet decided on my class, But i am definitely a combat kinda guy. We shall see. I would recommend anyone talking to their wives about the game. If they aren't into combat stuff, their are classes such as healers.. and in many ways classes don't have to be a main focus for a casual player. We had some people in our guild that just wanted to craft things and help out the town by having their own business or just doing what they want without the combat stuff. See, this is the good thing about MMO's... you are not limited to do the things everyone does. You are your own person and can go any direction you want and create your character based on what you want out of the game and your style of play.
Like Crazy, i will focus on AOC when it comes out, though I will spend some nights playing COD4. Hard to get away from that.
As I am not so interested in being a guild Leader, I am definitely up for a Guild officer role and will help build the guild from the ground up.
MMO's i have played:
Star Wars Galaxies an Empire Divided
Guild Wars - All expansions
World of Warcraft
Fury
EvE online
Lineage II

Hmmm....maybe I should re-think this LOL. I figured we would have a couple of assassins .... I know we have at least one Assassi :D
I'm glad you and Rage want to step up and lead this guild....I know we have a few others here interested in doing this as well (just haven't seen this thread yet).
Rage- I hear what you are saying about getting on the same server to build our home base. I think you more experienced guys should figure out where to do that once we all get this monster.
I'll be in.....I think.....Sounds kind of cool...I still want to jump that gal in the blue from the video!!!

Yeah we should just forget about seeing any of these guys for awhile. Sure they will drop in for a thread or 2, but forget any active involvement in any other team activities. The last team I was on 4 years ago most of them went and played WOW. Me and Tort are the remnants of that group. TJ was one of us too.
When I joined Old School Soldiers I knew it as a group of guys that played shooters. It has evolved into what is now OSG. Racing, flying, shooting and RTS are all great genre's because they can be done in one session. MMORG's will just suck you in every day. It will not only affect your online friends but offline life too. It may seem $15 a month is not alot but you will want to get more than your money's worth. Have fun hopefully we will hear from you from time to time.

That's why I want us to do our own and stay on our TS. You are right...many get involved in one and you don't see them for a year or whatever! I still plan on playing everything else (especially R6V2!).

MMO's will only effect your life if you let it. I have been playing MMO's for a loooong time and still have my friends.. and have made a lot of strides forward in all aspects of my life. The only thing that needs to be done is to seperate reality from the virtual world. If you have even the smallest sense of responsibility, you will be fine.

Im with Balti, I will continue to play everything. I cant imagine giving up head shots on Hedge and Ninja. Its like giving sleep.... it wont happen!

What Mac said is how I feel also. Lost touch with at least 20 people in 2 years over WOW. Just to name a few are Furiousone, Blaze, ERS Big Zee, etc. etc.. After two years they are finally coming around again. Like I said, these are just a few. I personally don't like running across a map for a piece of dried meat to be returned for an apple pie and a new quest. Sheesh, how boring can life get to do this kind of crap for 10 hour stretches. I guess I will go clean the garage for a year or two.......

I'm sure to be checking out the Age of Conan as well. My buddy Joe at work can't stop talking about it. We should get a server picked ASAP so when the game starts running we all start on the same server. Nothings worse than getting your toon whacked by the "We're on the OTHER server" MOB.

something roo said in an email i recieved about oblivian. oblivian is a single player RPG, not an MMO. OB limits you to solo journeys with no one to interact with as with MMOs you can venture throughout the worlds with other people and complete quests together as well has enter dongeons and raid zones to take down bigger bosses for better gear.
the guys that want to learn more about MMOs you should go and download the free trials i mentioned here on the forums, curantly there are eq2, lord of the rings, and wow free trails. if anyone does download and wants a walkthrough i will start up one with you, i have a lvl 50 active account on LOTRO that can meet up with you to show you around and how things work, if you choose eq2 or wow i can create a free acount along with you and show you around there as well. like i said there free so try them out and you will get the feel and most questions answered by doing so, let me know and ill be happy to log in with you, i have all games still installed and ready to go.

come on nip, you fly planes online with many other people right? this is no different then flying with a bunch of your friends enjoying something new. everyong has there likes and dislikes about each game but having an open mind is better then putting down something others are looking forward to
this is a multi gaming community meaning not everyone plays the same games. im sure some will get tied up for a while in the AOC and or warhammer but they will still be apart of OSG so it seems. hell i slipped away to LOTRO to try something new for a few months and im still around, nothing like my disaperance for 3+ years like eq2 did and even then i found my way back to the great guys i use to hang and play with from the start.
Balti has done alot in keeping this within OSG to continue and possibly help grow this community. dont look at it as loosing your friends as i dont think any of them will be lost in either game for more then maybe 1 month, notice that some of them have been playing eq2, wow, GW, and LOTRO already and are still around. this will just be another game that will ad to there list as im sure if flight sim came out with another expac or new game it will ad to your collection but we all seem to join together on 1 game (COD 4 atm) night after night, even you you old fart.

"WHATEVER" People play what they want to play. I am not going to stop them. If they enjoy it, then go do it. I just see so many here don't have the hours to spend in gaming and in with this type of game they will be overwhelmed. So be it.... I will always find people to play with. I am not mad at anyone nor do I hold any animousity to those that play any game. Have fun! Later.....

not any different then the time consuming games like COD4, BF2, TF2, RSv, nascar, flightsim, so on and so on. yeah sure when new games come out and a community agrees to play said game they play the said game for some time dedicated to it for weeks maybe even months but eventually they settle back down and start playing everything else in there gaming collection as we are now.

Nip, I was like you in thought. All my friends left my guild.. to check out SWG. I was disappointed... but after a year of them asking me to try it.. I did and it was the best game i ever played even to date. So i feel your pain, i totally understand, but... there is some cool stuff coming out and I'm sure you would like it.

Ironwolf are you aware if the server names and locations have been released? I think we should be sure to enter a server in Texas so everyone has a low ping...though im not sure if there will be different server locations. I also feel its important that we all join a PVP (player vs. player) Sever.
But definately if the server names are released, we should be sure to agree on one.
FuRiouSone

the servers arnt like FPS games. all servers are in one city where they host the entire game. you shouldnt have to worry about ping with MMOs just choose one everyone else if going to join.
best thing to do on choosing a server is choose the first one on the list when the game opens up as this is most likely the same choice most everyone else will choose giving that server the most population.
there will more then likely be 8 to 10 servers to choose from none of them being different then the other other then the name.

I know most of you guys dont know me. I work with Balti. I too have pre-ordered this game and i am looking fwd to recieving it. I am more of the healer type thats what i did in SWG and WOW. Im not sure why but it just seems like me. I dont know if anyone else did but i applied to Beta test it so we will see what happens with that. If i get accepted i will keep you posted on what i think of in game play.

I would much prefer to play on the RP PvP server as that is where the most intense game will be. The RP tag servers prohibit out of character local chatter, and makes for a more immersive game imho. Nothing worse than someone in local yelling "YO I Pwnzored Joo!!" in an otherwise great fantasy setting.
I intend to play either dark templar, or demonologist.
