Having no experience with racing or car customization, I'm not sure how much this will help, but for a lot of graphics tasks you'll probably find Paint.Net more useful and with a much lower learning curve. The target audience of Photoshop are professional graphics artists that spend their entire day in the program, so it's very powerful if you use it often but kind of a PITA if you pick it up once every few weeks, not to mention owning it legally costs hundreds of dollars.

Try this instead:

I have used a variety of programs for painting cars. The main two that are out there are Photoshop and Paintshop Pro. Photoshop will run you a couple hundred dollars where as Paint Shop Pro comes out around 50 dollars.
People say Photoshop is the best and for the price it should be, but honestly, I perfer Paintshop Pro. There is no real difference and I think PSP is easier to use.
But like Bucko said, if you are gonna spend that much money on one of these programs, you should be using it for more than just painting cars.
