Tonight we played a new custom map -- the first one MaxxBlood has created. He asked for our brutally honest opinions right when it was loading, and many of us were probably thinking to ourselves: "what am I gonna say if it sucks?"...

...Let me say it not only did not suck, but it was VERY well done, lots of lush foilage to sneak around, things to blow up, people to shoot, well designed buildings and a very interesting overall environment! Not to mention you can set an massive section of the jungle on fire.. hehe.... We all had fun on it and yes, we were being brutally honest when we said it was great! If you saw it and didn't know better, you would believe it was professionally done by the Ubisoft team themselves. One of the great parts of this game is the map-sharing, which made getting everyone on it painless.

I plan to post an update every now and then when something eventful happens, but I will spare you guys from hearing "tonight was great, we had X number of players for Y number of hours" updates every time we have a good night of play, because every night is a good night of play and those who are there know how good this game is and the rest will adopt it when and if they decide the time is right.

I also did something that's kind of out of character for me tonight when I told a guy who was in our server in the in-game chat to "get on the fuckin point for fucks sake" or something to that effect... lol... For those that don't know me well (and it's hard to know anybody well on Teamspeak), you've probably noticed that I don't do that often and I have done backwards somersaults to help new players out in this game. This guy (I think is name was Alias-something?) had asked in the lobby how to capture points and it was explained to him, I saw him capture points (when he was motivated to do so), and I gave him many more gentle nudges that should have guided anyone with even a small amount of motivation to work as a team in the right direction. When I said what I said it was in all caps to try to light a fire under him, not because I was genuinely pissed or because I take gaming that seriously. I normally don't make apologies for my behavior but since the server was labeled team-osg I did feel to an extent like I might not be representing the clans best interest by yelling at someone.... when I set everyone to rank 19 I have no way of seeing who is new and who isn't. Ok so the guy needs to wake up a bit.. :) but if I had it to do over I probably would. There, I had my Jerry Macguire moment, you had me at Hello... lol!

Anyway, the main thing I wanted to say is that since Dec 23rd I've been gaming A LOT. A lot more than I normally do during my normal work schedule, which many times excludes me from gaming much any time except weekends. My gaming time is going to drop off quite a bit around Jan 3rd or 4th as I get ready to return to work on the 5th and clean up all of the horrors that have been created in my absence at work :)
.....soooooo...... With that fact in mind I will not have as much time to help out newer players with the finer points of the game that I learned simply by playing the game when it first came out. This is one of those games where the graphics instantly amaze, but if a new player joins a server with lots of experienced players, it could be frustrating. Many of you now know this game as well or better than me (in no particular order): Sask, Nip, Iceman, Goat, Pill, Kilrkonman, McFeely, Maxxblood, Miller... and I know you guys can help newer players learn the things that you only learn by either playing for many hours or by learning in a couple of hours with the help of a friend. So, I hope that once my availability tapers off slightly, you will help others learn what the menus do, how to join a server, when to go ranked vs. player server, how to heal self vs. teammates, how to capture points, how to unlock weapons, which weapons are good......etc.. Just the basics stuff. I know I have been running the server most of the time but I suspect at some point this will be handed off to a dedicated server and those who do that well (...and believe me I am here to help with that effort when the time is right).

I'll be most grateful for the help you guys can lend along the lines of transferring knowledge....and although this is a new game, I think all of us will find in 8 or 9 months is is going to be the next "Battlefield 2".

Yeah, I remember when you yelled "on screen" at Alias. I laughed to myself and never thought any more of it. The only thing I did then was, calmly explain to him step by step what he was supposed to do. The poor guy didn't know he was Captain again...lmao...because when I told him he had to capture points, he said, "But I thought only captains captured points." I then responded, "You were Captain that last round." I think his response then was something like, "Oh." I'm sure if the bumped up ranks were off, we'd see a 1 or 2 next to his name.

As for helping out the "new" guys as they jump on board, I'm always there to help out when I can. I may not be able to do the write-up that so enthusiastically give...lol. I hope you don't get offended when I use "Jack Bauer's" voice instead of your's to read your posts!! lol

Heheh.. well I don't know how Jack Bauer talks since I don't know who that is, but no doubt his voice is more well suited than mine. If that guy were on teamspeak I would have liked to use R. Lee Ermey's voice (drill sgt. from Full Metal Jacket) with him :) The thing that bugged me was that if I am in a game, and someone types a message to me half a dozen times, at some point I am inclined to stop, type a response back, even if my only response was "duh what do I do next?" or something like that. Not only was the guy not asking questions, he was completely ignoring the messages (many of them) on his screen, running around shooting..maybe he wasn't seeing them, so I tried to use words that would get his attention quicker. Lol. Also I just assumed he knew he could capture points since he had already captured one as I recall?

As far as the write up, I doubt there's need to write anything at this point unless you wanted to. Most of the things a new person needs to know have already been written here in the forum, but an occasional reminder that the information is here never hurts. I think what helps the most are just answering the questions that folks naturally have coming into the game.

Sorry I missed the new map from Max and the tizzy fit by you! Hehe, to get you upset takes a train wreck. I will be on later this afternoon and tonight to continue the carnage. Tomorrow night I am sure many will be celebrating.
As far as helping people I will do what I can but I still consider myself rather new.

You don't know who Jack Bauer is? Wow...lol. He's the main character of 24...Keifer Sutherland does his voice.

LOL! Well I was really only slightly annoyed but when one think didn't work I figured I would escalate things until they did work. I really should have just issued a change captain command early on. Anyway if I didn't have the server labeled as team-osg I wouldn't have bothered to comment on it, just though others might have felt badly represented by it.

ah ok.. I vaguely remembered it was a TV or movie character of sorts. I never actually watched 24.. I rented the first season once from Netflix and was not able to get interested in it right away. Funny we're on the subject of Keifer Sutherland though... last night I rented The Lost Boys (the last time I had watched it was 22 years ago), and it surprised me how well it has held up with time. The overall premise / story is great and directing is pretty good for the trendy films of that time period. The special effects are pretty weak by today's standard and of course there are things that date it clearly in the 1980's like Corey Haim's haircut, and I'm still not sure why it's rated R because in retrospect it feels easily tame enough to be PG.... But if they did a modern remake of this story, complete with computer effect for all the vampire attacks and so forth, it could be amazing. They could get Keifer to play the head vampire instead of the teenage one.

There's a Lost Boys 2 out...never watched it yet. It has Cory Haim and Cory Feldman in it (I think both of them).

Hmm.. A quick glance at the trailer and the imdb page at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1031254/ and I would likely not be inclined to give it a second look. A 4.6 on imdb is usually pretty bad. I dunno, maybe it would be good if watched right on the heels of the original. One of the reviews I read seemed like a lot of jokes in the sequel reference the original so it may be better if the original is fresh in mind.

Also it seems that Corey Feldman is the primary actor in the sequel.. his role in the first was not insignificant but he was really only about 5% of the total cast (maybe less).. it was Corey Haim that had the bigger role. But I think if they wanted to really do this right they should just focus on taking the story and make it their own rather than just create a novelty movie with references to the original.

Yeah, it looks like it sucks.

Back to FC2 maps...we should have some fun with what Maxx started. Perhaps every week have a turn showcasing a map. If there's 4 of us interested, that's one map every 4 weeks (until we get bored). We could call it "Show n' Tell Night"...lol.

I think that's a great idea, I didn't really think that far ahead because I wasn't sure how many people would be inclined to make maps. Personally I may or may not ever get around to actually making maps with it but it would be great if others here decide to do that.

Your scheduling idea is a good one too... The one thing I think we should avoid is that every session becomes a map beta test to try version 1.0, version 1.1 etc.. LOL. I deal with version control at work and believe it will drain the fun out of anything.

So maybe a scheduled show and tell night would mitigate that. We will think that one through and come up with something.

Buck0, what are you apologizing for? My usual method of getting the slackers to move is to shoot at them. They learn to play or get out. It may seem too extreme but was quite effective in Ravenshield for door blockers or the overly cautious. A few friendly fire incidents does wonders for escalating team awareness.

Yeah, I think I did give him a couple in the leg, I don't remember.. I'm used to not doing that because in ranked mode it gives you negative XP.

Thanks Bucko...

I'm going to make more maps soon. I just need to come up with something that does not suck. I'm thinking something with the tankers and lots of water.

Yours didn't suck in the least Maxx. By all means make another. Sask and Keeper created their own today too and many of us played them for a while. The map editor, the Far Cry 2 engine, the game itself, and the execution of it all put together are a real masterpiece. Most of what we thought were bugs in the beginning were just things that weren't documented well enough and when we got it figured out it all came together. Most addictive multiplayer game to come along in ages.
