I got the game through Steam tonight. That Steam is pretty slick...so far anyway. I did try to use the steam tool adjust the settings? If that sounds right...anyway, it errored out....I'll have to get with someone to tell me what to do.

Also, it said I need to update my vid card drivers. ONce again, no idea how to do it.

I'm going to play through the single person for a few nights....there are alot of damn buttons to get to know...sheesh. I freed the first chick from the hut..nice hoots!!!

Yeah, I like Steam a lot actually. Not sure what you mean about the Steam tool though. You can dink around with the benchmark tool which is in the game directory, in your case it will be somewhere under Valve\SteamApps or something like that.

The update video card drivers is more or less an FYI so that you don't blame the game for any video issues :) I haven't updated mine in a while but probably should, though it is unlikely to affect gameplay.

The keys get easier once you play for a while. There are some slight differences in single and multiplay, but the keys are mostly the same.

Best thing to do is just jump into TS when you see us playing, many folks here are quite up to speed and can help out, and if I'm there I certainly will.

Hmm.. The 2.0 throws me a little bit because I can't think of anything that would be version 2.0. Was in 9.0c or something? If so it might have been complaining about DirectX which would make more sense to me with regard to version number but not why the tool won't load and the game will?

Hmm.. well anyway I wouldn't worry too much about the tool, it's more of a coolness thing for experimenting. You can experiment the same way in the game, it just might take slightly longer.

If the game plays smooth and looks good, it's all that matters. Most likely you can get it looking a lot better than the defaults by experimenting with the resolution and also the settings. When I first installed it, the settings it defaulted to were too low, so I went through and set everything as high as it would go, except I kept resolution at 1280x1024 and I do not use anti-aliasing.

If single player video performance is good, it will be comparable in mutliplayer.
I would say turn things up a bit higher than the default install, and try it out in single player. If things get choppy, go back and experiment with backing stuff down. The only thing the benchmark tool really buys you is the ability to do what I've described above at a faster rate.

The main thing is that I think in most cases the default settings will be too low and it will look better for most people if they bump it up a little.

Sounds good...for the little bit I played single player last night, it looked fine. I do agree..the graphics are amazing. Driving a car...when you run off the road, instead of bouncing off a bush, you run over it....I kind of ran the car into a fence...fence broke...and so did the car. I couldn't get it going again.
Looking forward to jumping into some mulitplayer with you guys...

Today as I was headed to lunch with the girlfriend, it suddenly dawned on me that 2.0 must be talking about the .Net Framework. I'm seeing this used more and more in games. Makes sense why the benchmark tool might have an issue with it and the game itself might not.

I have both, and I'd recommend getting FC2 first. Not just because I like the game better, but because of the way ranked game mode works. You unlock weapons based on XP that you earn through team wins, kills and healing teammates like most games. The difference here is that unlike BF2 or the COD series games, the higher unlocks really make a big difference in your effectiveness. So, in my opinion anyone who waits too long to get the game is going to be going into ranked servers against a lot of level 20s that is going to make it exponentially harder to rank up. So to get long term enjoyment out of the game I recommend getting it sooner rather than later and ranking up.

WaW does of course have a ranking/unlock system, but you can still compete well enough with the first level weapons. You also rank up much faster in WaW (several ranks per hour sometimes), and at the end of the day rank does not matter much in WaW since they do have point-farming servers out there where you can go straight to level 65 in one sitting and get all the unlocks. In Far Cry 2 that's not possible on ranked servers.

Well last night I know I pulled a disappearing act. It seems like some folks (kids likely) were vandalizing node pedestals in the area. I lost my internet, phone and cable last night for about 4 hours. Luckily I did not get called into work, but the outage affected about 15,000 people last night. Little bastards cut the feed just as I was about to shoot another grenade up Nip's ass.
