That's the first article I've seen that didn't mention the pirates were in a "skiff", which in terms of naval combat is about as formidable as a single engine Bassmaster. The reason that's important is because I think the real news here would be some sort of psychology study on what, for even a minute, made them think attacking a frigate was a good idea?

Shortly after midnight, the suspected pirates fired on the USS Nicholas west of the Seychelles Islands in an apparent attempt to seize the ship

Darwin's natural selection at work here! I think it's so cute they think they can mess with the U. S. Navy...two more grease spots in the ocean!

The dialog might have gone something like this:

Pirate A : Here we go boys, get ready to open fire.

Pirate B : Umm, thats a US frigate, and we're in a little piece of shit boat that looks like it would probably have to struggle to pull Belinda Carlisle across the water on waterskis. Are you sure this is a good idea sir?

Pirate A : Stand down soldier! (in Somali accent) A smaller vessel gives us an advantage, they can't see us coming!

Pirate B : In that case wouldn't jetskis have been a better choice for this attack mission? :)

Pirate A : Don't be a smart ass. Open fire boys!
