I finally got around to completing the single player campaign today. Finishing single player is sort of a tradition for me in the COD series, mostly because they tend to be extremely short which works well for my schedule (games that require dozens of hours are not as likely to be completed unless they are really, really good). They also tend to be heavily scripted and linear, and although I do appreciate sandbox type games that allow lots of exploration, I rarely have time to take advantage of it, so a game that railroads you straight through like COD is a good fit for me.
I understand some of the reasons, but not all, why this was the worst COD single player I've played yet. Part of the reason was although I mentioned that sometimes heavy scripting is a good thing, it was overdone in this game. It felt like I was just watching a movie that occasionally let me shoot some things, and the movie itself was mediocre. I couldn't get interested or immersed in the story at all, and finishing the game started to feel like a chore. Even the ending felt kind of anemic compared to the Infinity Ward games. There was nothing wrong with the gameplay or graphics, it was typical COD in that regard, and I did not encounter a single bug along the way. Unless an unrelenting desire to put the game down and take a nap is considered a bug?
On the bright side, I think COD has always been about the multiplayer and that's where I always get the most value. The MP game in BlackOps surprised me in the sense that it did not completely suck (I've written in the past about my opinions of Treyarch, and here I think they showed that they are capable of a decent COD MP title). It's still just COD, and it's a formula that I think is sort of wearing out its welcome with many players.
I expect most of my game time around Christmas to be spent on BC2:Vietnam once released, that and getting some game time on the new maps. I also want to pick up where I left off on Fallout : New Vegas to scratch the single player itch, I didn't get a chance to do this over Thanksgiving break.
