Last month I had a power supply go bad in my secondary PC and it took out some components with it. It was long in the tooth anyway, so I just got a new pre-built i7-870 based system to act as my secondary system, and I am once again very happy with Velocity Micro as a vendor, as it is a nice system but it is not in the same league as my primary gaming system, including a cheaper case, "good enough but not great" vid card, etc. My question relates to the case and hard drive light on it.
The case in the new secondary PC has the hard drive access light on the front of the case (there is no door). This light blinks about once per second even when idle. At first this struck me as odd just because I wasn't used to it, so I loaded up ProcessExplorer and I can see all kinds of shit (normal stuff like services) creating / reading files, reading reg keys etc. Fair enough. I have a lot of development stuff so I tried turning off all but basic Windows services to see if it made a difference. It still does it of course.
So, looking at my primary PC... there is not an external HD access light on the case, but both systems have a side window on the case, and I can see in my primary that there is a light on the mobo right where the SATA connections are (onboard disk controller for sure) that blinks about once every second as well.
Since this system (primary) has been running without a hitch for 1.5 years I am inclined to assume a HD light that blinks once a second is a normal situation and is not causing undue wear and tear on the disks? Can anyone confirm / deny?
Thanks for any insight...
