Hey guys:
Just wanted to let ya know why I haven't been on the past couple of days. Well on Tuesday night I did something I don't normally do! I shut my computer off. When I went to turn it on Wednesday morning about 1100 am, I had no power in the tower! Damn that rhymes? Well, after all the checks being made I replaced the power supply that was in it, 430Watt, with a 600Watt that I had laying around but when I went to boot it up it won't boot up right, so now I am trying to get it to boot up. I keep getting the message across the screen to reboot in the normal manner or hit any key but that doesn't do anything. So I am still working on it. Have checked all plugs and connections. Oh by the way I did find one fan in the front of the cabinet that was inoperative and replaced that also. It was blocked with dust so maybe that's why I lost the power supply? I shall return after I get everthing running right. Take care!

HMMMMMM...sure sounds familiar.....You didn't by chance do a windows update did you? I did and mine took the perverbial SHIT on me too....I have the same thing, get's to the "safe mode" "last known good configuration""Normal settings" screen and goes no where from there.
Going to give a shot at booting off the CD tonight and see if the repair counsel does any good....

Hey Roo,

When you say the repair console are you talking about the actual Command Prompt portion of the Windows XP Install. I have never had any luck using that.....maybe because I never took the time to learn the proper command parameters:p

If you want to "Repair" WindowsXP then Boot up from the CD-ROM as normal and then select Install WindowsXP (versus Repair) when prompted, then when you select the drive to install to, it will recognize you already have WinXP installed and give the option to re-install, repair, or exit. I usually choose repair here and then you shouldn't loose too many program path settings etc. It is always a bit of a crap shoot when you re-install but 75-80% chance that it fixes problems......or at least postpones problems for a while :D

Sounds good Slaughter...will give it a shot. Any way of finding out what the last windows update was, so I can get rid of it???

I'm not 100% sure if it keeps track of all updates (or just major ones) but I know I have seen WinXP Updates listed in the Add/Remove Software Feature.

If not familiar with this portion of WindowsXP click Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs....I am not very confident that you will find the last update there.

The other...safer option....would be to roll back your computer to the last saved point using the System Restore feature in WinXP (provided you didn't do like me and turn it off to save HardDrive space) :D

You can access the Restore Wizard / feature by clicking

Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools and then by clicking on the System restore icon. It will then guide you through the options to restore your system to a saved point. I am not that familiar with this feature because (like I said) I got tired of it chewing up HD space everytime I installed new software. This feature is On by default so unless you remembered turning it off you should be in luck.

Hope this helps...and bear in mind that Windows will most likely update again if you restore to a state previous to the update. With a bit of luck though the update might not cause you grief this time.

Now that you mention it I did try to do an update but it wouldn't let m install any of them but then again maybe a couple of them did sneak through. I think I will give your idea a try myself and see if that helps. But I did have a bad power supply anyway and this one is a lot bigger? Thanks guys. Also to check your last updates click on update history and it will tell what all had been installed on your computer. My big problem has been that hardly any of it is being sintalled for some reason?

Morgan, who USED to play with us on here...told me, regarding updates...never install any of them unless they are "security" updates.

I'm going with that from now on....

what happened to me was..........my 'puter started acting up and then died completely. I borrowed a motherboard from a friend to see if that was the problem and this new motherboard had LED's on it indicating any problems. It said my CPU was not working.....so I bought a new motherboard and CPU but I also noticed that two of the pins on the power supply main plug into the board were blackened and the plastic insulation discoloured, this leads me to believe that a power supply fault fried my CPU so I also replaced that. Maybe your blocked fan has caused the CPU to overheat and fail goat.

Yes that could be Brit but I have been keeping pretty good watch on my Temp for the mother board and Power supply along with the other temps. It has never gone over 131 Degrees Farenheit or 54 degrees Centrigrade that I know of. When I get it back on line I will check the temp log and be able to check the entire system and you may be right? Hopefully your not because I don't want to buy a new mother board at this time, lol! Thanks for the info though. It is appreciated!

I feel for you on the ram thing, I had a similar problem on my last computer. Drove me crazy until I figured it out. If I had only had my 1-800-call TJ support line handy I would have figured it out a lot quicker.
