Silent Hunter III with the 'real U boat' mod and next year they are doing a Pacific version.........................I can't wait. Years ago I used to play 'Silent Service' on the Amiga.....this game is about 50000000000000000000000 % better...

Did you say Silent Service... Oh the memories.
Gee that's before my times I think, lol!

yup, silent service 2........... you'd increase the time compression to 32 so it didn't take you two real weeks to get to pearl harbour and be depth charged and sunk before you knew it ..........lol. There were nights I was up until the early hours playing that dumb game.
I'll try and get some good screenshots of silent hunter and post them on here. There is a multi player game but I've no idea whats involved....... guess I'd better read the manual huh? (who EVER reads the manuals????? )

Ships at sea fall into two categories. There are submarines, and there are targets.

Try telling that to Captain J Walker RN, HMS Starling, Second Escort Group. Sank or shared in the sinking of 13 U boats.

Can you play this one on VPN or internet? If so, I'd get it and join you...I love those games.

OK, the multiplayer looks like this (there were two games running when I looked....)
play on Ubi.com using your Ubi id and password (the one you use to register the game when you buy it) OR play on a LAN server which I guess we could do over Hamachi.
They all seem to be co op games involving wolfpacks against various targets such as large convoys of merchant ships or warships. the difficulty level and number of players can be selected as can the type of u boat and crew. Bear in mind that even WITH time compression a typical attack on a large convoy can take a couple of hours REAL time (depending on the difficulty level) The one game I started to see how it worked had 4 u boats spread over a large part of the south atlantic and one large, well protected convoy to attack.... I could see that just getting everyone in position would take a while. could be interesting though, specially with voice available to communicate.
Heres some jpegs of typical charts showing patrol grids

things to bear in mind if you are thinking about buying this game are
a, it should come down in price soon (if not already) cos a new version is due out early 2007 which will feature US subs against the Japs.........
those slinky Gatos and those funky Jap battlewagons with the pagodas.....ah heaven......
b, from the sound of the posts on the subsim forum though, you might need a pretty good computer in order to play it

If it's silent hunter 3 you're talking about, it's $19.99 Canadian at futureshop (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10058636&catid=11130). I may actually try it out.

yup, silent hunter III......... pretty good game in itself, but if you go to www.subsim.com and look for a mod called 'greywolves' (it's supposedly free but they ask for a minimum $20 donation) that will make the game a whole lot better.........if you're not that concerned there are other free mods on subsim which will improve the look of the game (realuboat being one). I've always liked subsims and this one is good, the only thing to watch is, don't use the x1024 time compression if there are lots of things happening in the game (like moving out of harbour) cos it may lock up your computer. If it does seem to lock up, just leave it alone and eventually it should catch up with itself.

During Desert Storm, we didnt drop a single sono bouy. Because all Iraqi subs were destroyed in-port.

from my current career including a couple of the boats interior. When you give an order, the watch officer (the guy in front) turns and acknowledges.
The first pic is a bit difficult to see cos it was a dark and stormy night...and all the robbers were sitting around the campfire
